Vamizi

Ecotourism is a word too often misused and exploited however the Maluane Project in Northern Mozambique sets new boundaries and guidelines for how this specific type of sustainable, low impact tourism should be run. Research and planning started in the area in 1998 and today the project aims at creating some of some of the worlds finest beach hideaways and safari retreats whilst observing strict environmental and conservational guidelines; without doubt, this is one of the most pioneering tourism projects around today.

Set amongst a vast conservation area in the Quirimbas Archipelago, Maluane is home to some of the last untouched, pristine environments on the East Africa Coast. Consisting of 3 Indian ocean islands (35 km of beach to be precise!) and 33,000 hectares of private land on the mainland set aside for safari, Maluane hosts 3 luxurious island lodges, Vamizi, Rongui and Macaloe and Lake Macungue, a luxurious safari lodge.

Set on vast beaches that compete with anywhere in the world, the island lodges are breathtaking. Vamizi, the flagship lodge, consists of 12 extravagant rooms spread down one end of a 7km long beach. Rooms are huge with massive fourposter beds, open lounge areas and huge bathrooms providing fore some of the most luxurious accommodation in Mozambique.

Rongui is a smaller lodge set on a smaller island however the island is uninhabited apart from the 6 rooms of the lodge itself, the beach is just as stunning, surrounded by mangrove and palm trees.

Macaloe is closer to the mainland then the others but nevertheless, the beach is exemplary. The lodge is larger than Vamizi and Rongui with a total of 24 chalets. Just off the coast lies the world renown fishing hotspot of the Lazarus bank, home to large numbers of sailfish and marlin.

According to geologists from the Great Barrier Reef (who are some of the privileged few that have dived on these untouched reefs) the coral and sea life surrounding the islands is spectacular; diving here is considered a real treat.

On the mainland, the Maluane Wildlife Reserve is still largely untouched and quite frankly no one yet knows the quality of the game. There is however one thing that is certain and that is that there is hardly anywhere else in Africa that safari enthusiasts are as intrigued by; this is the one of the last refuges of the continent where game is known to be completely unaffected by man.
